Race Report: Castle Howard Triathlon

In its seventh year, the Castle Howard Triathlon was be the fourth weekend event of the 2016 Castle Tri Series, featuring the obligatory picture postcard backdrop and a course with something for every level of triathlete. The 13,000 acre grounds of Castle Howard are said to form arguably one of the most physically demanding triathlon course of the Castle Tri Series.

Race entrants started the race by swimming through Castle Howard’s Great Lake, before transitioning into the technical bike route through rural Yorkshire and the Howardian Hills. The run leg passes through the undulating countryside of the estate before a sprint finish tops everything off in style right in front of the main doors of the house.

Competing in the 2016 event for the Yorkshire Vikings were Aaryan Sharma, taking part in the 11-12 year age group race, and Hannah Middleton, taking part in one of the relay races, completing the swim section.

Aaryan was competing for the second year in the Castle Howard race, aiming to improve on his 2015 performance in the 8-10 year age group race. Moving up an age group meant an increased distance to tackle in 2016, racing a 200m swim, 4km bike and 2km run. Aaryan completed the race in 49:33, with splits of 12:43 swim, 2:19 T1, 14:54 bike, 1:15 T2 and 18:22 run.

Hannah took part in the Super Sprint Distance Relay race, an event made up of a 400m swim, 23km bike and 4km run. As part of “Team Burn and Company Solicitors”, Hannah took on the swim section, completing her leg in and T1 in 16:54. The team came home with a total time of 01:42:46.

Great results for two of our Vikings in the very popular Castle Howard series race. Well done Aaryan and Hannah!
