Welcome to Club Championships 2018

Do you want to follow in the footsteps of our 2017 Club Champions Steven Dews and Emma Forsyth?  Or maybe fancy competing with our 2017 Swim, Bike and Run Champions Heather Blakey, James Goodman, Shaun Sumner and Alana Reveley?  Of course you do!  Well, the 2018 season is nearly here!

Whilst it might seem only yesterday that we were celebrating the successes of the 2017 season, the beginning of the Club Championship 2018 is nearly upon us!  On 1st March 2018, everything kicks off again, and Vikings members can begin submitting their results to qualify for the individual competitions.

For any new members, or anyone unsure of what competitions are available, or how they work, here is a little reminder.  All members of YVTT can enter any of the competitions below, each having both a Senior, Youth, and Junior equivalent.

  • Club Championship – points scored in any multi-sport race (Aquathlon, Duathlon or Triathlon).
  • Swim Championship – points scored in any swim only race.
  • Bike Championship – points scored in any bike only race.
  • Run Championship – points scored in any run only race (this includes weekend Parkruns).

Between 1st March 2018 and 31st October 2018, members can enter any event, and score points based on their finishing position within the race.  These points are calculated relative to the size of the field racing, and to the distance of the race (i.e. you get more points if you finish high in a larger field size, or if you race over a longer distance).  For previous seasons, this only applied to Club Championship races.  However, for 2018, in Swim, Bike and Run Championships, members will now score higher in races over a longer distance, to match the scoring in the main Club Championship competition.

For every event each member enters, they will score points for that event.  All YVTT members can enter as many events as you like, but the overall score will be based on your best 3 scores attained over the course of the season.

Note:  If anyone would like to know the exact calculations to how points are calculated, let me know.  It’s quite geeky and boring, but I am happy to share!

As in 2017, there are bonus points available for allocated Club Events, British Championships, Triathlon England National Championships, Great Britain Age Group Qualifiers, or Great Britain Age Group races.  Details of the bonus points available are all listed below.

Yorkshire Vikings has expanded incredibly over the past couple of years, so 2018 really should be our most exciting year to date!  This does, however, make it that bit more challenging to keep up to date with everyone’s races.  So please let me know as soon as you’ve done a race, and you’d like to submit it to your results for scoring.  You can do this by contacting me via facebook, email, via the club website or via teamapp.  If it is easier, I’m also happy to share my mobile number to text in results.  Let me know if you’d like me to send this on, and I can do that separately.

Bonus Events 2018

Club Events – Score + 10%

Seniors – Driffield Triathlon (6th May), Allerthorpe Sprint Triathlon (7th July), Castle Howard Triathlons – any distance (21st/22nd July), Allerthorpe Classic Triathlon (5th August), Goole Triathlon (7th October).

Juniors – Driffield Triathlon (6th May), Wakefield Triathlon (24th June), Ripon Triathlon (1st July), Allerthorpe Aquathlon (7th July), Castle Howard Triathlon (21st/22nd July).

British Championships – Score + 15%

Triathlon England National Championships – Score + 15%

Duathlon Age Group Qualifiers – Score + 15%

Triathlon Age Group Qualifiers – Score + 15%

Great Britain Age Group Event – Score + 20%

There are a number of European and World Championship Events running over the course of 2018.  Any YVTT member taking part in these events will receive the maximum bonus points on offer for that event.

2017 Season Starts 1st March!

You’ve trained hard all winter, and the new season is finally nearly here!  On 1st March 2017, you will be able to begin entering your results to count towards all of our club competitions.

All competitions run from 1st March 2017 to 31st October 2017, and there are no limitations on the events you are able to enter.  Everything is explained below, but we specifically score our points based on event type and distance to make sure you are not restricted on the events you enter, you are rewarded for the really challenging or prestigious events, and you are able to build your event calendar as you like!

From 1st March 2017, when you complete an event, send in the result to us via the details sent out recently on TeamApp.  If you need these submission details re-sending please let me know.

For our club race reports, these will also change a little this season.  Based on our ever expanding and competitive club, the ability to write reports for every event has become somewhat difficult to maintain!  So for this year, results summaries will be posted, unless the event is included within our main events listed as part of the club championship below.  Our main events will get full write ups as in 2016.

As a reminder, the competitions you can enter this year are as follows:

Club Championship

Follow in the footsteps of last year’s club champion Rob Jamison, and last year’s junior club champion Olivia Bulmer, and compete for our top awards at the club in 2017.  Enter any event you like, all you need to do is notify us whenever you have competed in a multi-sport event (aquathlon, duathlon or triathlon), and your result will count towards the championship.  Alongside the main winners, prizes are also available for age categories Tristar, V30, V40, and V50 as in 2016, with the addition of additional categories Youth and Junior (Ages 15-18), and Senior (Ages 19-29) in 2017.

New in 2017 is also the opportunity to score extra points in the more prestigious events, or in club chosen events.  The points increases available are at the events below:

Club Event:  Score + 10%

Club events for Seniors in 2017 are:

  • Driffield Triathlon (7th May 2017)
  • Allerthorpe Sprint Triathlon (4th June 2017)
  • York Sprint Triathlon (2nd July 2017)
  • Allerthorpe Classic Triathlon (6th August 2017)

National Championship or GB Qualifying Event:  Score + 15%

GB Event:  Score + 20%

Swim Championship

Score points exactly the same as the club championship (explained below), but based on events that are swim only (i.e. not multi-sport).  The swim championship is flat scoring across the board, with no extra scoring events as in the club championship.  Last year Barry Jones took the Swim Championship title.

Bike Championship

Score points exactly the same as the club championship (explained below), but based on events that are bike only (i.e. not multi-sport).  The bike championship is flat scoring across the board, with no extra scoring events as in the club championship.  Last year we had no entrants in the Bike Championship – can you be our first club winner?

Run Championship

Score points exactly the same as the club championship (explained below), but based on events that are run only (i.e. not multi-sport).  This includes Parkrun, so there are plenty of opportunities to rack up the run points over the course of the season!  The run championship is flat scoring across the board, with no extra scoring events as in the club championship.  Last year Felicity Caddick took the Run Championship title.

Summer Run Series

The club competition aimed at putting everyone on a level playing field, and essentially designed to show who has improved their run the most over the course of the season!  To enter this event, simply send me your current 5km run personal best time.  Following that, any time you go out and run 5km, send this in (with a link to the run online, or an image of your running watch summary) and we’ll compare it against your personal best.  You’ll score points based on whether you’re close to, matching, beating, or smashing your personal best time.  Last year Sarah Weston took the summer run series title with a number of personal bests, a massive improvement over the course of the year.

Competition Rules

So there you have it, lots to go at this year!  I’ll try to keep up to speed on the events everyone is entering as the season goes on, and will add in results whenever I know about them.  However, there is a lot to go at, a completely non-restricted calendar, and a lot of club members, so please remember to submit your results as quickly as you can via the details we’ve provided to make sure they’re included!

As a reminder, the club championship rules and scoring is as follows:

Points are scored as follows:

Points will be awarded for performance within an eligible event. Each eligible event has a tariff.  The tariff value is the number of points that would be earned by the “40th percentile” finisher, or “reference finisher”.  Your total score is then compared against the tariff to give your event score.

This is all very complicated, but it is done in this way to ensure points can be scored regardless of event field size, regardless of event distance, and is comparable to the other competitors in the field competing on the same day.

These tariffs are:

Single discipline events (run, swim or cycle) – 70 points

Sprint/Super Sprint Triathlon, Duathlon or Aquathlon – 80 points

Olympic or equivalent Triathlon – 90 points

Ironman70.3 or equivalent – 95 points

Ironman or equivalent – 100 points

The points earned by a member is calculated thus:

Points = (Reference finisher’s time / Member’s time) x Tariff

So a member finishing ahead of the reference finisher will score more points than the tariff, somebody finishing slower than the reference finisher will score fewer points.  If you got exactly the same time as the reference finisher you would score the tariff points listed above.  Clear as mud?!

For the summer run series, points are scored as follows:

Points are scored based on performance against each persons 5km personal best, which is submitted at the beginning of the season and kept up to date throughout the season.  So essentially each member is competing against themselves.  Points are scored as follows:

  • Run within 2 minutes of PB – 2 points
  • Run within 1 minute of PB – 4 points
  • Run within 30 seconds of PB – 6 points
  • Run within 10 seconds of PB – 8 points
  • Run equalled PB – 10 points
  • New PB – 12 points
  • Beaten PB by more than 30 seconds – 15 points
  • Beaten PB by more than 1 minute – 20 points


2017 Club Competitions Update

After a successful first season trialling some of the Vikings club competitions, we will be looking to continue a number of the competitions next season, with a few changes, and some additions.

First, the changes.  In 2016 we trialled the Summer Run Series, the Swim Championship, Bike Championship, and Run Championship, but none really took off.  So in 2017, these events will be dropped in favour of concentrating on the Club Championship.  Of these events, there is the option to re-instate the Swim, Bike and Run Championships, should there be increased interest in competing in these individual disciplines.

All Club Championship events will run again in 2017, with the addition of a Youth and Junior Club Championship (Ages 15-18), and a Senior Club Championship (Ages 19-29).  Tristar, V30, V40 and V50 age categories will all run again as normal.

As in 2016, Vikings members will be able to enter any aquathlon, duathlon or triathlon race, and it will count towards points totals.  Points will be scored exactly the same as in 2016, but in 2017, members will have the opportunity to score extra points in certain races through the course of the year.  Anyone entering one of our assigned YVTT Club Events (below), a National Championship or GB Qualifying race, or a GB event, will have the opportunity to score extra points.  Extra points can be scored as follows:

Club Event:  Score + 10%

Club events for Seniors in 2017 are:

  • Driffield Triathlon (7th May 2017)
  • Allerthorpe Sprint Triathlon (4th June 2017)
  • York Sprint Triathlon (2nd July 2017)
  • Allerthorpe Classic Triathlon (6th August 2017)
  • Drax Sprint Triathlon (October 2017 – Date TBC)

Some opportunities to score some big points next season!  I’m sure everyone is in the process of planning their 2017 diaries, so if you’ve got an eye on a Club Championship prize, it’s worth looking at some of these events!

Following a few issues with logins last season, all Club Championship information and standings will be taken out of the members only section of the website for 2017, to make it easier for everybody to keep up to date on current standings.

Club Notice: Write Ups and Competition Standings

Well, it’s been a busy couple of weeks!  Apologies, got a little behind on the write ups and club competition standings, but keep your eyes pealed later today, when everything will be updated!  Race write ups to come from Windermere Triathlon, and Ripon Triathlon, and early next week Goole Triathlon, following this weekend’s racing.  Good luck everyone!

I will also be updating the Club Championship standings with the Windermere and Ripon results, and have some new entrants to add into the Run Championship Standings with some Parkrun results from the past few weeks.

Remember, any swim, bike or run events away from triathlon count into the competition standings, so let me know if you’ve entered any and I’ll add them in!

Club Notice – Update – 23/05/2016

Quick update on the club championship and summer run series standings from yesterday.  Some of the Driffield Triathlon competitors were missed off, and have now been included.  You naughty folks not putting your club name on your triathlon entry – tut tut 🙂

Rob Jamison Makes GB!

Rob Jamison GBIn February, just before our second birthday, Yorkshire Vikings earned themselves our first GB athlete when original member Rob Jamison qualified for the European Aquathlon Championships. The event, in June this year, is the latest and greatest achievement so far for Rob and I caught up with him to find out how he got to where he is and what’s next…

How did you get started in competitions Rob?
Competition has been a big part of my life from an early age until I stopped swimming at age 21. Then after a long period of inactivity and a need to get some fitness back I kind of stumbled into triathlon. Finding I enjoyed it, the natural progression for me was to try and be as good as I could through training and getting more race experience

What made you go for GB?
My boss is a GB age grouper and after talking to him about my races he suggested that I wasn’t too far off from being at that level. I’d not considered Aquathlons until I accidentally saw the results of the 2015 European Champs, and that’s what prompted me to go for that.

What was involved in qualifying?
For Aquathlons, there are no specific qualifying events like there is in triathlon. You can take your results from any Aquathlon and submit that as your entry. You need to be within 20% of your age group winners time for it to count though. From all of the submissions the best 20 are taken to represent GB.

What’s your next move?
My next move is to go for Triathlon Age Group qualification. The qualifying event for that being Liverpool Triathlon in August 2016. Also try to pre-qualify for next year’s Aquathlonsquad which you can do if your results from the Euro Champs are good enough (top 10 in age group and 3rd GB athlete.

Do you have any advice for current athletes or those just wanting to start out?
The first bit of advice I would give to anyone entering any event would always be to have fun and enjoy it. Following that it would be to take something from each event you do and learn from it and apply that in your next event. Also join a club. It’s amazing what a bit of focussed training can help you achieve.
